The heartbreaking disaster in New Orleans should serve as a preview to each of us of what we might face in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake (a matter of when , not if!). We encourage you to stock up on generous supplies of non-perishable food, water, medications and batteries for such an eventuality. Think about how you will communicate with your children and your spouse in the likelihood that cell phone networks might be down for some time after "the big one." Planning now might pay enormous dividends in the future.

After a sustained and substantial community-wide effort, a new armed patrol for the Palisades Riviera, SSA Security Group, began protecting the neighborhood on June 1. The new service uses highly-trained and carefully screened off-duty or recently retired law enforcement officers from the LAPD, the Sheriff's Dept. and other nearby police forces. The other two legacy patrol services are still patrolling the neighborhood, so the overall level of protection for the Riviera has gone up substantially, although those services are not dedicated solely to our neighborhood and their cars are outside the Riviera a meaningful portion of each shift.

The SSA patrol stays exclusively within the Riviera around the clock, 24 hours a day. There appears to have been a significant fall off in crime in the neighborhood since SSA's arrival. The high visibility and high density of their efforts around the clock were designed to deter crime before it happens.

In one of the few worrisome crime cases over the last three months, a resident's teen-aged daughter was harassed by two adolescent boys who were behaving in a frightening and bizarre fashion. With the help of SSA's patrol officer, the young men were tracked, identified and these terrifying incidents were safely brought to an end. We have all learned that we can better protect our families from predatory criminals by locking our doors and windows, using our alarm systems regularly and keeping the exterior of our homes well lit every night. Knowing we should do this and actually doing it are not the same thing. Make this a good habit you follow religiously!
